A Message from Chip

The three weeks I took off for continuing education and vacation were restful, reju-venating and energizing for my faith and my call. I spent the first week in Washington DC in a class at Wesley Seminary taught by Peter Rollins. Many of you have read his books, and I hope many more will. His insights into the Christian faith as a journey of exploration challenges the idea that God is equivalent to a set of unchanging beliefs. ―Christian‖ faith never lets us settle but always connects us more fully and more deeply with our God, one another, and the world.

Then my family and I spent two weeks on vacation in Canada with no email, voicemail, cell phones, internet, television, video games or any other devices. Instead, we read, ate, swam, played games, fished, ate, canoed and kayaked, ate, explored the area, played golf and … ate. All three weeks fed me (obviously) in many ways, and I am very thankful for the time off.

As that time away drew to a close, I became excited to return to my life in York-town and my call at FPCY. My family and I were glad to see our new home again. (I had only slept there one night in three weeks.) It feels good to say to one another about our new house and town, ―Welcome home.‖

At the same time, I was energized to return to work and continue connecting with you all as we grow in faith and live out our mission together.
―Our mission as God’s people is to invite all into a dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ through worship, prayer, study and fellowship and to work for God’s peace, justice, and human dignity by reaching out to the world in a servant ministry.‖

Our vision for a church that fulfills this mission is ―a community of faith, open to all, called to follow Jesus Christ, seeking to meet the spiritual & physical needs of our world with joy, support and love.‖

There is something truly dynamic (spirit-filled) about you all as a church. You are not simply doing mission projects. You are being mission. You are God’s people for one another and for the world. You are a faithful group of people sharing the love and justice of Jesus Christ as you grow in faith and live in service to our God for this world God loves so much. It is contagious and draws me back to be a part of God’s good news being lived through you all. Thank you!

Plans are well underway for us to live out our mission, to be God’s church called First Presbyterian Church Yorktown. I hope you will read this newsletter as an invitation to join in the mission of FPCY: An invitation to pray that we are faithful to the people and the work God has given us.
An invitation to offer your passion for faith and gifts of time, talent and money for God to use us to make new life, grace and love real.
An invitation to grow together in our own faith as God’s people and to live the story of God’s love in our service.
An invitation to share what is going on in our ministry with those in your own life and neighborhoods.
I am thankful for the time off, but I am also thankful to join with you in serving our God to-gether.
Serving Christ Together,
Worship

Serving the risen Lord together,

Chip
