Christian Education

STEWARDSHIP 2010

AND TOGETHER WE ARE:

THE EDUCATION COMMISSION

The Education Commission is responsible for nine educational programs of our churchThese include: Infant Nurture, Crib Room, Yorktown Presbyterian Preschool (YPP), Church School, Youth, Confirmation Class, Adult Education, Library and Vacation Bible School (VBS).

We Are the Church Together

Did you know that…

  • The Education Commission is made up of 12 church members and the Church School Committee is made up of 10?
  • the Church School Staff consists of 48 people, and 10 of them are teens?
  • Infant Nurture materials are sent to the parents of a baptized baby until the child is three- years- old?
  • the YPP was established in 1987 as a ministry of our church to address the need for quality child care in our community? Its board consists of both parents and church members.
  • VBS serves about 60 students from our community for two weeks each summer?
  • the Library offers materials for both research and reflection?
  • our youth are involved in many areas of our church life including Church School, VBS, our Food Pantry, Handbell Choir, Midnight Run, the Blood Drive, and serving as Elders and Deacons?
  • among our  recent Adult Education offerings have been such topics as: The Acts of the Apostles;  the best-selling book, Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert;  Mere Christianity, by C. S. Lewis; The Bible and Brahms’ Requiem; The Last Week . . . a Day by Day account of Jesus’ Final Week in Jerusalem by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan; Bread for the World: Hunger and Food Justice (an exploration of the Biblical concept of food justice and positive action Christians can take to alleviate food injustice);  The Faith Club (the true story of three women – a Muslim, a Christian and a Jew – and their efforts to understand one another); and Finding our Spiritual Ground (a workshop with Dr. Lisa Cataldo)?
  • Super Bible Man is really a mild mannered member of our church?

Welcome back!

It’s September and we are looking forward to another fun and enriching Church School year! We are blessed to have a wonderful staff to lead us into this exciting 2010-2011 faith education journey. A huge thanks to these generous and gifted volunteers.

Here are some details you might like to make a note of:

*Sunday, Sept. 12th: The Staff Orientation &Training will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the Parish Day worship service.

*Sunday, Sept. 19th: The commissioning of the Church School staff will take place at the 8:30 a.m. service. All staff volunteers are urged to attend. Our Church School program will begin! The Church School hour will run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. Our curriculum/schedule is posted on the Church School bulletin board down the hallway from Fellowship Hall. - Please remember to bring in your child’s $5.00 snack money contribution for children in the PreK – Grade 5 classes and deliver it to Melissa Shaughnessy in Fellow-ship Hall on Sept. 19th. Thanks!

*Communion Education Experience, Sunday Sept. 19th and 26th: NEW! The Church School staff, led by Kathy Anderson, will be conducting a new program, Communion Education Experience, which will provide children in grades K-5 with the opportunity to learn and reinforce fundamental concepts about the Lord’s Supper. Classes will take place over two Sundays, culminating in a group worship experience of the Lord’s Supper at the 10:45 a.m. service on World Communion Sunday, Oct. 3rd. We are looking forward to this special ―kick-off‖ to the Church School year!

*Registration Forms: You should have received Church School Registration Forms in the mail.
If you have not yet done so, please complete and return yours as soon as possible to: JoAnne Marsh, 338 Peekskill Hollow Rd., Putnam Valley, NY 10579.

You may also deliver it or mail your forms directly to the church office. Thank you very much!

We are excited to again be using a new strand of the Cornerstones Curriculum, “Witness to God’s Presence,” which starts with Genesis and ends with the Church. Themes throughout the school year will include: Creation, Plagues and Passover, the Incarnation, Feeding the Five Thousand, Lord’s Prayer and the Last Supper.
We hope that you have all had a relaxing summer. We look forward to seeing you soon!
