Adult Education

Adult Education at FPCY offers a variety of seminars, discussions, and programs. Topics range from Bible study to the recent Bill Moyers’ PBS series on Faith and Reason. We aim to support the individual’s faith journey. While our emphasis is on the Bible and other Christian writings, we also explore the wisdom of other faith traditions. We provide a safe place to bring our doubts. We also challenge one another to grow. Although we may disagree with one another, we support one another in our search. We find affirmation in our search for the truth as we strive to “live the questions now.” (from Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet).

                                     Curious about Calvin?

The Presbyterian family traces its roots to a John Calvin, the sixteenth century Reformer.

Who is this character, and what was it about his theology that birthed a movement?

Was he all about fire and brimstone, depravity and fear?

Or was he a passionate theologian of grace and love?

And, what, if anything, makes his theology relevant today?

Come meet your long-lost cousin in the faith, John Calvin, and see how his faith might just shape yours.

Advent Study:

THE FIRST CHRISTMAS: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’s Birth

Sundays:   Nov 29, Dec 6, 13, 20

9:30 AM in the Lounge

Prepare for Christmas by exploring a fresh, deep understanding of the nativity story . . .

Advent Book Study led by Rev. Chris Shelton

By Marcus J. Borg & John Dominic Crossan

In The First Christmas, top Jesus scholars Marcus Borg and Dominic Crossan help us to read the Christmas narratives in the gospels of Matthew and Luke in their original context, giving us a richer and much more challenging perspective on the gospels. The authors ask “What do these stories mean?” both in their first century context, and for us in the 21st century.
