Haiti

Friends. In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, we as people of the resurrection must ask how we can support the relief efforts already underway there to see hope rise out of chaos.

Here are some suggestions:

1.     Pray for the people of Haiti, the relief workers and the efforts to bring aid.
2.    The Mission Commission will be collecting donations at Church over the next two weeks and sending it to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.
3.    Go to    Presbyterian Disaster Assistance     to learn how our denomination is responding to this crisis. You can donate online if you wish.
4.    Consider how you, our church and the people you know can do something together. Go to Get Involved with   PDA   to learn more.

God of compassion, please watch over the people of Haiti,
and weave out of these terrible happenings
wonders of goodness and grace.
Surround those who have been affected by tragedy
with a sense of your present love,
and hold them in faith.
Though they are lost in grief,
may they find you and be comforted.
Guide us as a church
to find ways of providing assistance
that heal wounds and provide hope.
Help us to remember that when one of your children suffers
we all suffer;
through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives
and rules this world with you. Amen.

Haiti Update

Our Moved by the Spirit Sunday School class has put together more than 70 health kits and the 6-8th grade class has also put to-gether more than 40 kits. They will be sent to the Presbyterian Dis-aster Relief Assoc (PDA) in Louisville, Kentucky.

They will ship them down to Haiti with oth-ers that are being collected. We hope to have a dedication/prayer time in worship and in the Sunday School gathering time in early March to bless the kits before they are sent. We will try to have photos available when they are ready to go.

 Haiti Blog

Mark Hare (Stephanie Hare's cousin)   is a PC(USA) mission worker in northern Haiti and offers first hand accounts on his blog.

In his post dated January 14th, he makes a very important point about how the damage in Port-au-Prince will probably create a serious ripple effect for the entire country.

La Oroya , Peru

A Journey to Peru and Back

On May 29th, I will be embarking on an 11 day journey to Peru with a small group from our Presbytery under the leadership of Chris Shelton. We will be meeting up with Jed Koball, formerly of our Presbytery and now serving as a Mission Co-Worker with the PC USA in Peru.

Jed will be leading us on a journey to encounter and engage with Peruvian partners in ministry as we deepen our understanding of the challenges faced by our Peruvian brothers and sisters. Our objectives will be ―to dig deeper into a globalized world and political and economic systems in order to better understand the root causes of poverty; dig deeper into ourselves in order to hear God’s calling and share our faith in responsible ways; dig deeper into the role of the church in world mission today in order to un-derstand our role in international church partnership.‖

Among our planned encounters, we will visit an urban youth run radio station address-ing local issues of poverty and the environment; coastal communities recovering from an 8.5 earthquake; Andean alpaca farmers and artisans responding to the urgent crisis of global warm-ing and La Oroya, the most polluted place in the Western Hemisphere where 99% of the chil-dren have lead poisoning. Our church school children have written cards and letters for me to deliver to the children in La Oroya. I will be bringing photos of our church and of our church family along with me as well.

It is my hope that this may become a connection from our community of faith to their community of faith. I am hoping that you will keep us actively in your thoughts and most impor-tantly in your prayers.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

TENTH ANNUAL SUNDAY

AFTERNOON CONCERT SERIES

In November, our Sunday Afternoon Concert Se-ries will celebrate it’s tenth year of providing beautiful music to our Church Family and extended community. Supported by the generosity of our music patrons, over the last ten years we have provided a diverse repertoire of musical offerings from children’s concerts with Annie and the Natural Wonder Band to the Yale Whiffenpoofs, -- from a swing dance with the Bob January Swing Orchestra to the Pergolessi Stabat Mater.

This year will offer five concerts plus a Mardi Gras dance with the musicians from the Bob January Swing Orchestra. In the fall, Katherine Fong and the Varrick Trio will return with their unique blend of modern and classical music. Ms. Fong is a member of the Metro-politan Opera Orchestra as well as a rock star violinist. Check out her webpage: www.katherinefong.net
!
In December, under the direction of Simona Frenkel, our choir and invited soloists and orchestra will offer the most popular of our holiday concerts, Handel’s Messiah. And the Christmas Season would not be complete without the candlelight Chamber Music Concert during Christmas Week featuring David Baranowski and friends.
Just before Lent, we will offer an opportunity for dancing (or tapping your toes) to the music of the Bob January Swing Orchestra featuring the big band sound of the 40’s, and an opportunity to practice your Lindy and two-step. Later in the spring, we hope to offer a return engagement of the Yale Whiffenpoofs. Our ambitious musical season will conclude in May with our Spring Con-cert, directed by Simona Frenkel.

We hope you will celebrate the gifts of our musical talents, guests, and invited profes-sionals by joining us for this exciting season. If you are interested in becoming a Patron for the 2010-2011 season, please give a check for $50.00 (or more) payable to FPCY, and note it is for the Concert Series 2010-11. Checks may be given in the collection plate or given to the office.
