Deacon Highlights

Deacons have not taken a Summer break.

We still continue our mission work with Food Pantry, Loaves and Fishes, Hospital and Homebound Visitation and the Blood Drive. Every Sunday flowers from the service went to members of our congregation who are unable to attend the Sunday service along with a disc of the service. Loaves and Fishes ended May and June with close to 15 meals delivered.

Food Pantry saw a little slack in pace with fewer families coming but still averaging 50 to 60 families and 120 bags of gro-ceries. The Blood Drive helped to boost the Local Blood Supplies. Many thanks to all those who donated blood. Ryan Mulcahy was the organizer and has plans to organize an-other Blood Drive in the Fall. We hope you can volunteer to donate.

Every year, the big Summer job is a major shopping expedition to supply the Back to School Kits which we will be distributing to our school age Food Pantry recipients. A big worry this year was where were the funds to purchase the supplies going to come from. Working with what looked like a limited budget, the committee chairladies Jill Pagliettini and Terri Froehlich, with Katharine Frase and Louise made 25 trips to Walmart, Staples and BJs to get the best bargains to make our funds go further. Walmart had some of the best bargains but would not sell more that 10 of any one item.—but we needed 100 of each item for 100 kits. This meant returning 10 or more times for only 10 items a visit, but somehow all the 100 kits made it to completion. Typical items that make up the Back to School Kit are pencils, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners, magic markers, crayons, compo-sition notebooks and folders. When we did get special deals we all cheered. It involved lots of e-mails! We had 20 volunteers helping to pack all the kits. A speedy bunch , it was all done in less than 30 minutes. Operation Back to School Kits Project did receive addi-tional funds through some very generous donations. However, more donations would be welcome so that the Deacon's Fund for emergency projects will not be depleted. If you wish to make a donation, please put it in an envelope marked Deacon's Fund and drop it in the Sunday Offering plate.

That is about all the excitement that the Deacons have had. Yes, there will be Back to School Kits for our young friends.
