Stewardship Update

Many thanks to the  Adult Giving Units and  Youth who have committed to our church‘s ministry for the coming year. If you intend to make a commitment to our Church‘s ministry for 2010, we hope you will complete a pledge card as soon as possible and drop it in the plate or mail it to the church office.

We are putting together the budget for what looks like a very challenging year and we need to hear from you! If you cannot make a commitment, it is helpful to know that also.

Barbara Darragh for the Stewardship Committee

Spring Cleanup Report

Despite a bit of lingering rain, we had a fabulous turn out. More than 130 boy scouts, church members and extended family and friends showed up to clean everything inside and out.

Thank yous go to Deanna Collins who spear headed the job of organizing and lining up volunteers; members of Boy Scout Troop 165 who turned out in force to rake gravel in the parking lot and assist with the many outside jobs; Ian Spence and his family members who brought cake to celebrate an important birthday with him during the clean up and enthusiastically joined in all the work as well;

Craig Hibben and his loyal crew of gardeners and of course all the rest of our church members and friends who made this one of the most successful clean ups ever. The early birds had breakfast and the rest of us enjoyed a great lunch together before taking their tools and heading home.

Cans of Tuna needed:

Lisa Graham is participating in the Relay for Life, to be held June 11th-12th at the YCCC. They are collecting cans of tuna to be used to weigh down their luminary bags, which will then be donated to the Yorktown Community Help food pantry. So please bring a can or two to the church, leave them on Lisa’s front porch or contact her. The Relay Committee's goal is 2,000 cans - let's do it together!

Sunday Worship Services are now on CD

Sunday Worship Services are now on CD  If you know of some one (e.g., housebound) who would like to receive a recording of the worship service, please contact Chuck Radke 914-962-4370.

The Deacons will arrange for delivery of a bulletin and a CD recording.  Also, if you have a small, simple to use CD player that you aren't using anymore, we could use it (Call Chuck Radke and he will come to pick it up).  Many of the homebound do not have one.  Thanks.

Biblical Garden

Plants mentioned in the Bible are a living link between us and the people in the Bible.  They are symbols which allow us to think about spiritual messages and truths.

There is a small group of people interested in creating a little garden with plants from the Bible.  We hope to label the plants with references from scripture and become more aware of the important role plants played in the stories of the Scriptures.

If you would be interested in participating please contact Lynda Spring: sprinla@hotmail.com or 914-528-7570 or Carol Myers: CMyers4487@comcast.net or 845-225-4205.

New in the Church Library

Summer Reading from the Church Library
Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan join once again to present a new understand-ing of early Christianity--this time to reveal a radical Paul who has been suppressed by the church. In The First Paul; Reclaiming the Radical Visionary Behind the Church's Conservative Icon (227.06 B), they use the best available scholarship to reveal that some of Paul's letters are not authentic, but were created by the early church to dilute his egalitarian message and transform him into something more "acceptable" to Roman so-cial norms. The Paul that emerges is an appealing apostle whose message is remarkably faithful to the message of Jesus himself.

What could a book entitled Velvet Elvis (248 B) possibly have to do with Christian faith? Rob Bell, pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church in Michigan, likens the current church to a painting on velvet of Elvis hanging in his basement--it represents just one artist's conception. But what if the artist or the viewers were convinced that this paint-ing was the only true painting ever done of Elvis? Bell believes this is what has hap-pened to the Christian church; that it is a painting that can neither be changed nor al-tered. This book is for those who are also wrestling with the true definition of church, and of Christianity, and who need a fresh take on Jesus and what it means to live the kind of life he teaches us to live. (If you've seen some of the NOOMA videos in adult education courses, Rob Bell also produced those videos.)

Rachel Naomi Remen, author of My Grandfather's Blessings; stories of strength, refuge, and belonging (248 R), is a cancer physician who encourages readers to recognize and celebrate the unexpected blessings in their lives. Some of her recollections come from experiences as a medical student and physician, but others from her relationship with her grandfather, who died when she was seven. The stories are simple yet powerful, such as that of a young woman whose husband helped her discover the real meaning of beauty years after her devastating mastectomy; of a widow who learned to cherish her husband's memory with love instead of with "a monument of pain"; and of a little boy who recognized that it's easier to love just a few toys than it is to love

If you're curious about whether the Church Library has a particular book, there's an easy way to check. On the shelves near the book return box is a loose-leaf binder containing an author list of all the adult books in the Library, and a second list by call number (which represents subject areas). There's a second copy of the notebook in the Church Office.

Healthy Women Healthy Families Mother’s Day Card Project

Beginning this year, our Mother’s Day Project will be called the Healthy Women Healthy Families Mother’s Day Project. The project will work the same way it has in the past. It is an exciting opportunity to broaden the impact of the annual Mother’s Day mission activity that our church family has generously supported for several years. The Mother’s Day Project, which benefits PC(USA) NetWorkers Malaria Prevention Program, is expanding to also assist a variety of other programs that improve the health of women and children.

The Healthy Women Healthy Families Mother’s Day Project is an opportunity to help church partners in Africa provide preventive health services and medical care to women and children while we honor women in our own families on Mother’s Day. Presbyterian Women and International Health and Development Ministries working together provide special Mother’s Day cards in exchange for donations to the project.

Your purchase of a Mother’s Day card will support health programs in Africa including malaria prevention and treatment, obstetrical care, fistula surgery, cervical cancer screening and family health education for women and for children, immunizations, health screenings, nutri-tional rehabilitation and primary care.

In April we will remind you about the project at worship. Beginning April 25 and May 2, cards will be available for purchase in the Gathering Space. The suggested donation is $10 but any amount will be accepted. The Mother’s Day cards are a blessed way to remember women in your life who do not need or want anymore of the ―stuff‖ purchased in their honor. The cards indicate in a special way that special women are being honored and special women and children are being helped.

Marsha Henderson is coordinating The Mother’s Day Project on behalf of our church. We have participated in this mission to protect and restore the health of women and children in Africa since 2001. Your continued support is appreciated.
