Church Mission

Successful Blood Drive on May 9

2009 Blood Drive

Ryan Mulcahy, deacon and youth co-leader, put together a successful, well organized blood drive.  We’d like to thank him and all the teens who gave time escorting woozy donors to the juice and cookie recuperation table, among other helpful tasks.  Thanks go to Ryan Prestiano, Mallory Eliasson, Allison O’Connor, Mike Cruikshank, Jennifer Pepe and Amanda Friscia.

We would also like to thank all our donors who made it possible to exceed our quota.  Thanks for the gift of life.

The church received a note from the New York Blood Center for the very successful
blood drive held at our church in May. Many thanks are due to Ryan
Mulcahy who organized the event as well as to all who volunteered and donated.

May 11, 2009

Dear Mr. Mulcahy,

On behalf of the New York Blood Center, I would like to thank you for sponsoring
a blood drive at First Presbyterian Church on May 9, 2009.
We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with you and your organization
to produce such a successful drive. The event collected 44 pints of blood,
which have since been separated into their components and distributed to patients
throughout the area.
It is your effort and the commitment of our friends and neighbors that enable
us to meet the daily demand for blood products. There is no substitute for caring people
who takes the time to donate blood so that others may live. Your organization has
greatly helped us toward this goal.
Once again, thank you for helping us to fulfill our mission of saving lives.
Should anyone from First Presbyterian Church have any questions regarding blood
donation or wish to make an appointment to donate, please call 1-800-933-BLOOD.
You can donate whole blood every 56 days.

Sincerely,
Sandy Cohen

US Postal Workers’ Food Drive on May 9

The FPCY Food Pantry has once again benefited from the recent US Postal Service Food Drive.  Due to the generous donation of hard work, both from the US Postal Service Letter Carriers, the Boy Scouts, FPCY Youth, and our Food Pantry volunteers, we received, unloaded, inspected, sorted, and stored over 3,000 pounds of food.

Thanks again for everyone who was involved in this effort.
    Peter Marsh

We would like to thank all the teens who worked very hard and put in many long hours to help process the huge amount of food delivered by the Postal Workers.

They loaded boxes and bags filled with heavy canned goods from the mail trucks to pallets where they were wheeled to Room 16 and an army of volunteers -young and older-checked dates, sorted foods by categories, packed boxes or stowed cans on shelves with machine - like efficiency.  Thanks in a big way to our teens: Ben Child, Liam McAuliffe, and Amy Savino who helped to make an overwhelming task possible to finish.

Networkers Mother's Day Project

2009 PC USA Health Ministries

The support of friends and families of this church for the Networkers Mother's Day Project resulted in raising $873.  This will be used by PC(USA) Health Ministries to make a real difference in the lives of women and children in Africa by providing thousands of mosquito nets to protect vulnerable people from malaria.  Thank you for choosing this way to share God's love.

Tag Sale -- Saturday, June 13th, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Do you have any gently used items around the house that you don’t want anymore?  Well here is your chance to find a new home for them and help a worthy cause.

I have been granted permission from the Mission Commission and the Session to hold a tag sale at the church on June 13th 2009 to help fund my trip to China this summer with People to People International.  Last Fall I was recommended and accepted to participate as a People to People Student Ambassador, Class of 2009.

In case you have not heard of People to People, please allow me to share some history with you that I have learned from my pre-travel meetings.  President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the organization in 1956.  He believed encounters between people of different backgrounds would form the foundation for lasting world peace, and he recognized the power of young people as leaders.  Since the first student delegation to Berlin in 1963, thousands of young Americans have safely traveled across international borders, returning home with a greater sense of what it means to be a global citizen.  As student ambassadors travel under the banner of People to People, they represent the best characteristics of our country: hope, courage, openness and a love of peace.
The tuition for the program, which includes travel, accommodations, meals, home stays and all educational activities is quite expensive as you might imagine.  People to People encourages all ambassadors to fund raise to help pay for their tuition, thus this tag sale.

I plan on collecting the items for the sale on Friday evening June 12th from 6:00 till 8:00 pm or before 8:00 am Saturday morning June 13th.  If these dates are not good for you, please contact me and I will arrange a time that I can pick up your donations.

Thank you for your support.  I look forward to sharing my experiences in China with you in the Fall.
    Sincerely,
    Carter Humphrey
    Youth Deacon

Update:
Thank you!  I would like to thank the congregation for their generous donations for my fundraising tag sale, as well as all the church members who came by to shop. The quantity of donations was nearly overwhelming, but they were a large part of the final success of the event. I was very happy and surprised to discover at the end of the very long day that we had made over $2,000 – enough to pay for one third of the cost of my trip to China this summer. I’m looking forward to my trip and I promise to share my experiences and photos with you during coffee hour this fall. Thank you very much for making this possible.
    Sincerely,
    Carter Humphrey
