Notes from the Session

The Session held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday May 4.

We began with a potluck dinner with the Deacons where Chip challenged the Elders to name five things that the Deacons do, and the Deacons to name ten things that the Session does. We all passed with flying colors!

We followed this with our regular Session meeting. The Operations Commission reported that this was the best Spring Cleanup ever. We congratulated the Operations Com-mission, and especially Dick Seymour, on the completion of the work on the steeple.

Chip reported that we would be welcoming a class of 15 new members on Sunday May 9th.

The Mission Commission talked about plans to celebrate More Light Sunday, and the Worship Commission reminded us that we would be moving to one 9:30 service beginning on Sunday, June 13.

Session  Retreat  2010 -- Recap and Followup

I had the pleasure of attending the Session Retreat this past Friday and Saturday (January 29-30) at The Presbyterian Camp in Holmes. It was a great retreat. When we all assembled there, we felt that the turmoil of the past couple of years was behind us, and here we were, ready to look forward with Chip, our new Pastor, to guide us.

So we began to look at the needs and direction of our faith community in the coming year as well as the needs and direction for our work to the greater community that we serve. We reviewed all our programs: what worked, what didn’t work, what failed, and where we came up short. Then we began to discuss what we would like to see happen this coming year.

As our discussion progressed, Chip jumped in and said he saw a common thread running through everything we were saying, and that was Connection. How do we better connect with God, how do we better connect with each other, how do we know the needs of each other, and how can we best serve each other, not just in worship and the big planned events, but in small settings and in individual ways.

We discussed using the new technologies available to us: our website and how that provides information to us and to the greater community; increasing the use of FPCY Announce (email group) so that we can keep abreast of current happenings, and using Facebook and Twitter to communicate in small groups or on an individual basis. While some of us do not use these technologies, their use is needed to make us a progressive, alive place as we move forward.

We reviewed and appproved the budget, which will be presented to you for your endorsement. And here again, we talked about connection: how can we present the budget in a way that better connects us with our story - what it is that we do here.

When we left Holmes on Saturday, we were all enthused and excited and hope you will be too as we work together this year to grow in our faith.

respectfully submitted,

Carol Myers,  for the 2010 FPCY Session
